Educational Field Trip - Jijamata Zoo
This October the EVS topic of Birds was augmented by a trip to the Jijamata (Byculla) zoo that housed spectacular birds. The children were enthralled to see the actual birds.  After being fed with a steady diet of smart class and soft board pictures, the images seemed to take shape form and transformed into live birds of every hue and colour! There were colourful Hoopoes, Lovebirds, Pelicans, Cranes, flamingos and huge birds with wing spans larger than the children themselves!

There was a rare white crow that amused the children who were always taught the crow is black. They were amazed to see bats hanging from trees and listened enraptured as their teachers, explained that the Bats are actually flying mammals and not birds also that they cannot see but move on the basis of their ultrasonic hearing powers. The children also watched mesmerised as the predatory Eagles soared in the afternoon sky.

A trip to the zoo is incomplete without seeing the elephant. The pachyderm never ceases to amaze the children. The sheer size of the animal sent whoops of joy among the children. Some of whom had only heard of ‘E’ for elephant never actually seen one!

Animals like the Hippopotamus in its natural habitat, Monkeys and their little ones, Crocodiles, Turtles, Deer, Snail …the children were speechless for once!

It was a trip to cherish as the children could never have envisaged Nature’s wonders just by looking in their little text books.

To conclude in the words of John Lubbock,
"Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books."
